Four Top 10 JUCO Volleyball Teams Set To Play In Wichita

FOUR OF THE TOP TEN junior college volleyball teams in the nation will be in Wichita for a top-level tournament at the Wichita Sports Forum (WSF) on August 25-26, 2017.

This is the first season for the Wichita Sports Forum Kickoff Volleyball Tournament. WSF director Brian Hargrove has invited six teams who are in the NJCAA Top Twenty preseason poll.

"We are extremely excited about hosting such a high quality tournament at our venue;' said Hargrove.

Hargrove and Kansas Jayhawk Community College (KJCCC) commissioner Bryce Roderick discussed creating a tournament that matches the top juco teams in Kansas versus the top juco teams fron across the nation.

"The KJCCC is proud to partner with the Wichita Sports Forum to host a premier tournament in their amazing facility. We will provide the best teams our conference has to offer, and we welcome schools from across the country to come start the season with us;' said Roderick.

Lincoln Land Community College will travel from Illinois with their #2-ranked squad. LLCC lost in the national championship match at the end of the 2016 season. Cental Community College of Nebraska comes to Kansas with the #9 ranking and an appearance in the 2016 title tournament. MCC-Longview of Lee's Summit MO comes to the WSF with a #18 preseason ranking.

Kansas teams in the tourney are Coffeyville (#6), Cowley (#10), and Johnson County (#17). All three of these teams have had success in recent NJCAA national tournaments. The plan is to make the tournament an annual event, with the Wichita venue offering so many attractions.

"The Wichita Sports Forum offers a great family venue. There is so much to do there for an entire family. There is also great shopping just across the parking lot, and tons of nearby restaurants:' said Roderick.

"Recently being named as one of the top ten multi-sport facilites in the US has opened the doors to bring in top level events;' said Hargrove.

The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission has provided support and benefits to the tournament, realizing the tourney is in its first year of existence in Wichita.

Next week's action kicks off at 4pm on Friday afternoon, with 6pm matches to follow. Saturday's slate opens at 9am, with final matches set to begin at 11am. Three matches will take place at the same time for each time slot.
