2017 Greater Wichita Sports Banquet

It was an evening of celebration at the 20th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet as local awards were handed out celebrating the athletic achievements in the past year. The event concluded with Johnny Bench, former Cincinnati Reds catcher and Hall of Famer, as he presented the Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com to Oral Roberts catcher, Matt Whatley. David Banuelos of Long Beach State and Brent Diaz of Louisiana Tech were also finalists for the award.
 
The annual banquet recognizes the achievements and dedication of local youth, high school, college and professional athletes and coaches. The winners were:

• Jewel Bolden, Andover Central High School – Lynette Woodard High School Female Athlete of the Year
• Matt Pile, Eisenhower High School – Barry Sanders High School Male Athlete of the Year
• Brynn Minor, Butler Community College – Junior College Female Athlete of the Year
• Shakur Juiston, Hutchinson Community College – Junior College Male Athlete of the Year
• Chelsea Baker, Friends University – College Female Athlete of the Year
• Hunter Veith, Wichita State University – College Male Athlete of the Year
• T.J. Mittelstaedt, Wichita Wingnuts – Professional Athlete of the Year
• Jamie Fowler, The Independent School – High School Coach of the Year (Men’s Sports)
• Joe Hutchinson, Wichita East High School – High School Coach of the Year (Women’s Sports)
• Steve Eck, Hutchinson Community College– Gene Stephenson Coach of the Year
• Butler Community College Softball – Award of Excellence
• Mark Potter – Award of Appreciation
• Matt Whatley, Oral Roberts University – Johnny Bench National Collegiate Catcher of the Year

“The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission would like to congratulate all of the award finalists and especially Matt Whatley, the Johnny Bench National Collegiate Catcher of the Year,” stated Bob Hanson, president/CEO. “They represent their teams and universities in a remarkable manner.”
